Fear Not: The Story Behind My First Book

|Houlda H

Some things are first written for ourselves, without ever imagining that one day, they might be read by others. That is a little like what happened with Fear Not, my first book.

I have always enjoyed searching for answers, asking questions, and exploring topics that interest me, especially those that are close to my heart. I like understanding things, discovering what lies behind certain questions, and taking the time to explore a subject until I gain a clearer understanding of it. This natural curiosity also led me toward reading and research. Throughout my university studies, I found an outlet for it in the research projects and theses I had to write.

Beyond my academic work, I also enjoyed studying certain topics in the Bible more deeply. Sometimes, I would choose a subject that caught my attention, explore what Scripture had to say about it, seek a better understanding, and take notes as my thoughts developed.

At the beginning of this year, as I was going through a period of uncertainty and my health was limiting my activities, I had plenty of time to reflect. My body needed rest, but my mind continued to search, ask questions, and explore subjects that interested me. So I decided to spend time studying certain biblical themes, simply because I wanted to learn, find answers, and allow the Holy Spirit to bring understanding and clarity through the Word of God. I accompanied these moments with journaling, writing down my thoughts, the questions that came to mind, and what I was discovering along the way.

One of the subjects I wanted to explore more deeply was fear. I was going through a season in which many things felt uncertain, and I found myself wondering why we experience fear, where it comes from, and what the Bible teaches us about it. I did not begin this study with the intention of writing a book. I simply wanted to better understand what I was experiencing, seek answers in Scripture, and deepen my relationship with God through the process.

That is how Fear Not began to take shape. At first, it was simply a personal Bible study, a collection of notes and reflections that I was gathering for myself. I did not yet know that this work would become a book, or that one day, other people might read it.

Looking back today, I find it beautiful to see how something so personal can grow into something more. What began as an attempt to better understand a subject that was affecting me personally can now be shared with others, with the hope that these pages may encourage them, too.

In Fear Not, I talk about fear, its origin, its various facets, but also what the Word of God teaches us about it. Because fear can take many forms. It can make us doubt ourselves, prevent us from moving forward, or lead us to give up on something before we have even tried. Sometimes, it hides behind our questions, our fear of what others think, or our difficulty in taking a step into the unknown.

We all have things that can frighten us, even if they do not take the same form for everyone. And sometimes this fear takes up so much space that we no longer really know how to move forward.

For me, Fear not does not mean that we will never feel fear again. It is not an invitation to pretend that our worries do not exist, either. I see it more as a reminder: even when we are afraid, we can choose not to let it dictate our decisions.

This reflection is closely linked to my faith. I am still learning to walk with Jesus, and my journey is far from over. I do not have all the answers and I do not always understand everything, but I am learning to place my trust in God, including when I do not know exactly what awaits me.

This is also what I wanted to share through this book. Not the story of someone who is no longer afraid, nor that of someone who has figured it all out, but a message that recalls the importance of trusting God in the midst of our questions and uncertainties.

Writing is something I continue to discover and develop. I like taking the time to put into words what I think, what I experience, and the things that are dear to my heart. And I also like the idea that these words might one day reach someone else.

After all, we do not always know what those who read us are going through. We do not know if a text will arrive at a particular moment in their lives, nor what they will take away from it. But if a few words can encourage someone, lead them to reflect, or remind them that they can keep moving forward, then I find there is something beautiful in sharing them.

That is what I hope for Fear not. I hope this book can accompany those who read it, give them food for thought, and encourage them on their own journey with God.

Today, Fear not is available in French, in English and in Spanish. I am happy to be able to share this message in these three languages and I hope it will find its place in the paths of different people.

If you decide to discover this book, I hope you will find words there that will make you reflect and encourage you to move forward.

Maybe you are going through a time where you don't really know which direction to take. Maybe a fear is holding you back, a question remains unanswered, or you are waiting to feel ready before taking a step. I do not know your situation, and I do not claim to have all the answers to your questions. But I believe that we can learn to move forward even when everything is not yet clear.

We can be afraid and continue to move forward. We can doubt and continue to learn to trust. We can fail to understand everything today without having to remain motionless.

This is also what I continue to learn on my own journey.

Do not let fear write your story for you.

Fear not.
